Reading the College Scorecard: what it shows and what it leaves out

The College Scorecard is a free federal tool that publishes data about colleges and programs. It is useful, and it has limits worth knowing.

The short version

  1. The Scorecard is published by the U.S. Department of Education.
  2. It covers costs, graduation rates and earnings for many programs, with some gaps.
  3. Averages describe groups, not any one student.

What it is

The Scorecard pulls together data on costs, completion, debt and earnings after leaving. It is public and does not endorse or rank schools.

What it covers

Figures often cover students who received federal aid, which may not be everyone. Small programs can have missing or masked data.

Reading averages

Median earnings, for example, describe the middle of a past group, not what any future student will earn. Differences between programs may reflect who enrolls rather than only what is taught.

Using it well

Use the Scorecard to form questions to ask a school. We do not rank or recommend schools or majors.

Majorira is an information website, not a school, college, lender, scholarship service, or government agency. We never decide aid, lend money, or refer you to programs, and we keep what you send us to ourselves. Treat every guide as background reading, not financial, legal, or admissions advice.
