Certificates, part-time study and adult learners: how aid can differ

Aid rules were largely built around full-time degree study. Other kinds of enrollment can look different.

The short version

  1. Enrollment level, program length and school type can all change what aid is available.
  2. Not every certificate program is eligible for federal aid.
  3. Employers and workforce agencies sometimes offer separate support.

Enrollment level

Many grants depend on how many credits you take. A part-time schedule can mean smaller awards, and some programs are only open at certain levels.

Program eligibility

For federal aid, a school and program generally have to meet requirements. A school’s aid office can say whether a certificate does.

Other sources

Some employers help with tuition, and state workforce agencies run training programs with their own rules.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the program is eligible, how enrollment level changes awards, and what happens if a schedule changes. We cannot determine anyone’s eligibility.
